VARIATIONS

Andrew Maxwell

i. woundedly                                Unspeakable silence. Dense after that thicket of birdsong

and solitude also. Before and then after that

luminous passage

of rain and rain also.

Before and then after. Perfuming that faceless

turn from which you always already turn

from which you

turn each eye always

already. Excessively

deep each

eye therein. Conceiving such

thunders and azurite also. Before

and then after. Conceiving

each terrible eye.

ii. beholdingly Grey daylight adorning.                    Soft as if as sudden as

rainfall in passing. Where breathless in passing. Where

dreamless in passing.

New flowers break open

throats only of asphalt and moss

which break open. New luminous

wings               which wings widen. Within which wings

unveil. What neither unspoken nor lovingly

spoken words unveil

words only. No image

of silence. No splintered wheel turning. Still

turning. Within

which will open. No

ravenous absolute

malachite eye.
